What makes a ruby red? It happens because of chromium. This is a special element found inside the stone. When chromium replaces some parts of the corundum, the stone changes color. It absorbs certain lights and lets out red light. This can even help make a ruby laser.

People look at many things to find a good ruby. They check the color, the cut, and the clarity. Clarity means how clear the stone is. Some rubies have tiny needles inside called silk. This silk can make the gem look bright.
