In 2022, that mine produced about 10 million carats of rubies. Other rubies are found in places like Thailand, Afghanistan, and even Scotland. Some very old rubies come from Greenland. These stones are about 3 billion years old!

You might recognize rubies from things you see in museums or shops. For example, the British Imperial State Crown has a famous stone called the Black Prince's Ruby. Even though it has that name, it is actually a spinel. Rubies are also the traditional birthstone for the month of July. If a stone is red but not quite dark enough, some people call it a pink sapphire. This name depends on where you are in the world. On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, a ruby scores a 9.0. Only diamond and moissanite are harder than corundum. Because of this strength, rubies are considered one of the traditional cardinal gems. This elite group also includes amethyst, emerald, sapphire, and diamond.

The brilliant color of a ruby is caused by a specific chemical process. Pure corundum is actually colorless and transparent. The red hue appears when chromium is present within the crystal structure. During formation, chromium atoms replace some of the aluminium ions.

Because chromium ions are larger than aluminium ions, they distort the octahedral arrangement of oxygen ions. This distortion alters the energy levels of the electrons. The crystal then absorbs light in the ultraviolet, violet, and yellow-green regions of the spectrum. Since these colors are absorbed, the light that reaches our eyes is red. This absorption also triggers fluorescence, which adds a perceived luster to the stone.

This unique interaction with light can even be used to create technology. A ruby laser works by utilizing the specific way the crystal handles light. When short-wavelength light is absorbed, the crystal lattice enters an excited state. If photons of a specific wavelength pass through during this time, they stimulate the emission of more red light. By using mirrors to pass this light repeatedly through the crystal, scientists can produce a high-intensity, coherent red beam.

Gemologists use several criteria to determine a ruby's value and quality. These are often called the four Cs: color, cut, clarity, and carat weight. Color is considered the most important factor. It is divided into hue, saturation, and tone. The most prized shade is a bright red known as "pigeon blood." Clarity refers to how many inclusions, or tiny internal features, are visible. Natural rubies often contain needle-like inclusions called rutile, which is sometimes called "silk." While many gems are valued for being "eye-clean," silk can actually increase value. For example, silk can create an asterism, or a star-shaped effect, when the stone is cut as a cabochon.

Because many natural stones have flaws, humans often use treatments to improve them. Heat treatment is the most common method used today. This process can alter the color or dissolve certain inclusions to improve transparency. Some stones undergo low tube heat at about 1300 °C for a short time. Other methods involve filling fractures with lead glass to make the stone look clearer. Experts can often tell if a stone has been treated by looking at the condition of the silk. Intense heat can degrade these tiny rutile needles, signaling that the stone is not in its natural state.
