It is a type of mineral called beryl. Small amounts of metals like chromium or vanadium make it green.

These metals change the color of the crystal.

Most emeralds have tiny cracks or marks inside. Some people call this a jardin. This is the French word for garden. These marks look like green moss.

Because of these cracks, emeralds can break easily. To help them look better, people often use oil. They put oil into the cracks to fill them. This makes the stone look clear and strong.

Many countries have emeralds.

Colombia is a very large producer. They have special gems called trapiche emeralds. These have dark lines that look like spokes on a wheel.

Zambia is also a big producer. Scientists can study the chemicals in a gem. This helps them find out where it came from. Some emeralds are even made by people in labs. These are called synthetic emeralds.
