Most people think of blue stones. But sapphires can be many colors. We call these fancy sapphires. They can be yellow, green, or purple.

Some stones have two colors. These are called parti sapphires. They are found in nature and cannot be made in labs.

Some sapphires show a star shape. This is called asterism. It happens because of tiny needles inside the stone. These needles follow the crystal structure. When light hits them, a star appears.

Other rare stones change color. They might look blue in sunlight. Then they look purple under indoor lights.

Sapphires are very hard. They score a 9 on the Mohs scale. This scale measures how hard a mineral is. Only diamond and moissanite are harder. Because they are tough, people use them for more than jewelry. They are used for watch parts and even electronics.
