Painite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Painite is a very rare mineral. A mineral is a natural solid. It was first found in Myanmar. A man named Arthur Pain found it. He thought it was a ruby. In the 1950s, people found it was new. They named the stone after him.

Painite has a special makeup. It contains calcium, zirconium, boron, aluminium, and oxygen. It also has tiny bits of chromium and vanadium. These parts give the stone its color. It is often orange-red or brownish-red.

This stone is hard to find. This is because zirconium and boron rarely meet in nature. Most crystals have a hexagonal shape. This means they have six sides. Some crystals may have no shape at all. They might also be orthorhombic. This is a different crystal shape.

People have looked near Mogok for this stone. They found many new pieces there. Before 2004, only two were cut into gems. Now, there are thousands of new pieces to study.
