We get alumina from a rock called bauxite. One way to clean it is the Bayer process. This uses heat and chemicals to make a white powder. Most of this powder is used to make aluminium metal.

This material is very useful. It is an electrical insulator, which means power does not flow through it easily. It also helps protect metal. When aluminium touches air, it forms a thin layer of oxide. This layer stops the metal from rusting away.

We use alumina in many ways. It is in sandpaper and toothpaste because it is tough. It is even used in medical tools. Doctors use it to make artificial bones and joints. It is also used in some body armor.
