Aluminium oxide

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Aluminium oxide, also known as aluminium(III) oxide, is a chemical compound made of aluminium and oxygen. Its chemical formula is Al2O3. This substance is incredibly important in modern industry and science. Most people simply call it alumina. It is also known by several other names like aloxite, alundum, or ALOX.

While it is a single compound, it can exist in many different forms. These forms change how the material behaves in different situations.

In nature, aluminium oxide often appears as a mineral called corundum. Corundum is the most common crystalline form of the compound. It is famous for its extreme hardness. On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, corundum ranks at a 9. This makes it nearly as hard as a diamond. Because of this hardness, corundum forms beautiful gemstones. Rubies are a type of corundum that gets a deep red color from traces of chromium. Sapphires are also corundum, but they get different colors from impurities like iron or titanium.

To make the aluminium metal we use every day, we must first extract alumina from a rock called bauxite. Bauxite is the principal ore used for this purpose. One common way to refine it is through the Bayer process. First, bauxite is mixed with a strong base like sodium hydroxide. This mixture dissolves the aluminium minerals but leaves impurities like iron oxide behind. The liquid is filtered to remove these impurities. Next, the solution is cooled so that aluminium hydroxide precipitates, or settles out, as a solid. Finally, this solid is calcined, which means it is heated to over 1100 °C. This intense heat turns the hydroxide into pure aluminium oxide.

Alumina has many unique physical and chemical properties. It is an electrical insulator, meaning electricity does not flow through it easily. However, it has relatively high thermal conductivity, so it can move heat quite well. It is also an amphoteric substance. This means it can react with both acids and bases. For example, it can react with hydrofluoric acid or sodium hydroxide to produce a salt.

Another vital property is how it protects metal. When metallic aluminium is exposed to air, a very thin layer of aluminium oxide forms almost instantly. This layer is only about 5 nanometers thick. It acts as a passivation layer, which prevents the metal from weathering or corroding further.

Because of its strength and stability, alumina is used in many specialized ways. In 2015, the global production of aluminium oxide was about 115 million tonnes. Over 90% of this was used to create aluminium metal. The rest is called specialty alumina. This specialty version is used in ceramics, polishing, and as an abrasive. For instance, many types of sandpaper use aluminium oxide crystals. It is also used in toothpaste and in microdermabrasion for skin care. Some even use it as a filler in plastics because it is chemically inert and white.

Alumina also plays a major role in high-tech and medical fields. It is a bioinert ceramic, which means it is compatible with living bodies. Doctors use alumina ceramics to manufacture dental implants and artificial joints. Its high strength and wear resistance make it perfect for these medical devices. In the world of defense, alumina ceramic plates are used in some types of body armor. Even in your home, you might find alumina in glass formulations. Aluminosilicate glass often contains between 5% and 10% alumina to improve its properties.

Finally, this compound is essential for many industrial chemical processes. It acts as a catalyst, which is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction. For example, it is used in the Claus process to turn hydrogen sulfide waste gases into sulfur. It also helps remove water from gas streams. From the gemstones in a ring to the metal in a soda can, aluminium oxide is a fundamental part of our world.
