A gemstone is a piece of mineral crystal.

People cut and polish these stones to make jewelry. Some stones come from rocks like opal. Others come from living things, like pearls.

Experts who study gems are called gemologists. They look at many parts of a stone. They check the chemical composition, which is what the gem is made of. For example, diamonds are made of carbon. Rubies and sapphires are made of aluminium oxide.

Gemologists also look at how a gem is cut. Some stones are cut into smooth, dome shapes. These are called cabochons. Other stones are cut with many flat windows. These windows are called facets. Facets help a diamond sparkle by breaking light into colors. This is called dispersion.

Many gems have tiny bits of material inside them. These are called inclusions. Even with inclusions, gems can be very beautiful. A green garnet called tsavorite can be worth more than an emerald. The value of a gem depends on its color, clarity, and rarity.
