Clay is a very common natural material found in soil.

It is made of tiny parts called clay minerals. These minerals are shaped like very thin, tough plates. Most pure clay looks white or light in color. However, many natural clays look red or brown. This happens when small amounts of iron oxide are mixed in.

Clay has a special way of working when it gets wet. It becomes plastic, which means you can easily shape it. Inside the wet clay, tiny water molecules act like a film. This film lets the mineral plates slip past each other. This movement allows you to mold the clay into new shapes. When the clay dries, the water leaves and the plates stick together. If you fire the clay in a hot oven, it becomes even stronger. This process changes the minerals into a hard, permanent material.

In ancient Mesopotamia, people used clay tablets as their first way to write. Scribes used a blunt reed called a stylus to make marks. These marks were called cuneiform. This method was helpful because clay was easy to find. Once the writing was done, the tablets could be fired to stay permanent.

Clay is used in many different ways in our world today. It is a key part of making paper and cement.

In many places, people live in buildings made of clay bricks. Between one-half and two-thirds of the world's population live or work in such buildings. Clay is also important for farming. It helps soil hold onto nutrients like potassium. This makes the land very fertile for growing crops.
