Making adobe bricks is a careful way of working. First, builders mix soil with water and organic material. They often add straw or dung to the mix. These materials help the brick dry evenly so it does not crack.

The soil usually contains sand, silt, and clay. Builders press this mud into a wooden frame to shape it. After a few hours, they turn the bricks on their edge to finish drying in the sun.

People have been building with earth for a very long time. Adobe architecture can be dated to before 5,100 years ago. In the Americas, indigenous peoples used it for many thousands of years. They used to build with handfuls of mud before the Spanish taught them to use bricks.

Adobe has special ways of working with heat. The thick walls have high thermal mass. This means they act like a heat reservoir. During a hot day, the walls soak up heat from the sun. This keeps the inside of the house cool.

When the sun goes down, the walls slowly release that heat. This keeps the living space warm at night. However, these walls can be weak during earthquakes. They were damaged in big quakes in Guatemala, Chile, and Bam.

Building with adobe is a lot like making a giant sandcastle. You use wet earth to create a shape that stays strong once it dries. In the United States, many people like the Pueblo Revival style of building.

This style uses the look of adobe even if different materials are used. Modern builders sometimes add cement to make the bricks even stronger. It is a way of using the ground beneath our feet to create a home.
