An arroyo is a dry watercourse that fills only sometimes.

It stays dry during normal weather. It flows after enough rain falls. These paths are very important in desert areas. They provide a water source for desert animals.

In many cities, people use them as parks. You might find bicycle or walking trails there. These paths help move water away from people.

Arroyos can form through a process called arroyo-cutting. This happens in dry regions like New Mexico. Heavy rains can make rivers much larger. The water cuts into the surrounding rock. This creates deep ravines that stay dry most of the time.

Some people think stormy periods are the main cause. Others say long-term climate changes also play a part. Other factors can change how these paths work.

Many things can speed up the cutting of an arroyo. Throughout the 1900s, overgrazing by livestock changed the land. Animals ate too much of the surface plants. Without plants, the ground cannot soak up rain well. This increases runoff from the rain. The water flows with more speed and energy. This extra energy helps the water cut deeper into the ground.

People also build arroyos for flood control. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, there are concrete drainage channels. These channels move water into the North Diversion Channel. This channel joins the Rio Grande river.

These man-made paths can be very dangerous. A dry channel can become a roaring river in under two minutes. This can happen even if it is not raining nearby. From 2017 to 2021, twelve people died in Albuquerque from sudden flooding.

Different parts of the world have different names for these paths. In North Africa, they are called wadis. In India, people call them nullahs. Italy calls them fiumare, and England calls them dry valleys.

The word arroyo actually comes from the Spanish word for brook. In the southwestern United States, these paths create a special desert biome. They are a key part of how dry land works.
