A dry lake is a low spot in the land. Scientists often call these basins a playa.

These areas once held a standing body of water. This happens when water flows into a depression in the ground. If the sun dries the water faster than new rain arrives, the lake disappears. This leaves behind a flat bed of clay or minerals. If the floor is covered in salt, it is called a salt flat. If it has alkaline compounds, it is an alkali flat.

How does a dry lake form? First, rain or other water flows into a low area. This creates a pond or a lake. Next, the water begins to evaporate into the air. If the evaporation rate is higher than the water coming in, the lake dries up. As the water leaves, salts stay behind. These are called evaporite minerals. They build up over time to create a hard surface.

Different parts of the world use different names for these places. In Mexico and the western United States, people often say playa. In South America, they use the word salar or salina. In Australia, they might say salt pan or clay pan.

Some people in Central Asia call them takyr. In Iran, they are known as kavir. These names help us understand how people see these unique landscapes.

Dry lakes are home to many special living things. Some rare plants, like Davis' peppergrass, live only in certain playas. In 2006, scientists found a giant fairy shrimp in Idaho. This shrimp can stay as tiny cysts in the mud for years.

Some animals, like antelope, visit these spots to drink after rain. However, these places face threats from pollution and runoff. Even rising temperatures are causing many large lakes to dry up globally.

Humans use these flat surfaces for many jobs. Because they are so smooth, they are great for fast vehicles. People use the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to set land speed records.

Some dry lakes are also used as air bases. For example, Edwards Air Force Base is located on a dry lake in California. We also find valuable minerals like lithium under the surface of some dry lakes.
