A dry lake is a low spot in the land.

It used to hold water. This happens when rain flows into a hole in the ground. If the sun dries the water faster than new rain comes, the lake disappears.

As the water goes away, it leaves things behind. Salts that were in the water stay on the floor. These are called evaporite minerals. Over time, these minerals build up. This makes a flat floor of clay or salt. Some places call these salt flats.

These dry places are very important for life. Many animals come to drink after it rains. Some rare plants and animals live only here. A giant fairy shrimp lives in the wet mud. It can stay as tiny eggs for many years. Some rocks even move on these floors. In Death Valley, rocks slide across the playa. This happens when thin ice sheets move in the wind. People also use these flat lands. Fast cars use them to set speed records.
