The lake looks very different at different times. In summer, the heat is very strong. Temperatures can reach 50 °C. This heat dries up the water. The lake may look white, green, or purple. You might even see a fata morgana. This is a type of trick of the light.

In winter, small streams flow into the lake. Pink flamingos come to the shores to build nests. People also go to the edges to collect salt. You can walk or drive across the lake. But be careful! The salt crust is not always firm.

Many people know this place from movies. It was used to film Star Wars.

Some people want to connect the lake to the sea. They want to make a new sea in the desert. This idea has been around for a long time.
