It sits in a hot desert. This lake is the lowest point in Africa. It is even lower than the sea.

The water in the lake is extremely salty. This is called salinity. The salt level is ten times higher than the sea. The sun and wind cause evaporation. This is when water turns into gas and goes into the air. Because the water leaves, the salt stays behind. This makes a big white plain of salt.

Salt is very important here. People call it "white gold." For a long time, Afar people used camels to carry salt. They traded it for things like coffee and ivory.

Today, companies use big machines to get the salt. They use it for many things.

Life in the lake is hard for most creatures. The water is too salty for most fish. You can only find tiny bacteria living there. Some small fish live near hot springs. The land around the lake has thorny bushes and lizards.
