earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lake Tritriva is a special lake in Madagascar.

It sits in a place called Vàkinankàratra. The lake fills a crater. A crater is a large hole made by a volcano. This volcano is extinct, which means it is no longer active. The lake is in a spot with many hot springs.

High cliffs made of gneiss stand around the lake. These cliffs are very steep. The lake is very deep. In fact, it is the deepest lake in Madagascar.

The water level in the lake changes. It drops during the rainy season. The water rises after the monsoon rains stop.

There are also special rules for this lake. People follow a Fady. A Fady is a taboo, or a rule that must be followed. Because of this rule, swimming is not allowed in the lake.
