geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Andringitra Massif is a big group of rocks. It sits in Madagascar. Some call it a desert of rocks. It is inside Andringitra National Park. The highest peak is Pic Boby. It stands 2,658 meters high. The land looks different depending on where you stand. The eastern slopes have steep cliffs. Tropical storms have carved channels into the rock. The western slopes are more gentle. They have some forests. At the bottom, the land is tropical. As you go up, you see thick lichen. Lichen are small plants that grow on rocks. Higher up, you will find hardy shrubs. Above the shrubs, the mountains are grassland. Herders bring animals here to graze. They look for fresh grass for their livestock. Many tourists visit this place too. They like to hike and backpack. They also want to see the rock shapes. The mountains sit on very old ground. They were made by a sudden volcanic event. The rock has changed over millions of years.
