It sits in the Indian Ocean. It is east of Madagascar and north of Réunion. The island was made by a volcano. Now, a ring of coral surrounds it.

The island is a hard place to live. There are no trees. Heavy winds blow across the land most of the time. In the summer, big storms called cyclones can hit. Because there is little fresh water, only grass and small bushes grow there.

Many animals find a home here. Green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles come to nest on the sand. The waters are full of fish.

Many seabirds also live here. The island is a very important place for birds to breed.

A long time ago, a ship called the Utile hit the reefs.

Some people were left on the island for 15 years. They built small homes from coral stones. They even kept a fire lit for all those years! Today, people visit the island for science. They use a weather station to study the air and the sea.
