Tromelin Island is a low, flat landmass located in the Indian Ocean.

It sits within the Mascarene Basin and is part of the Îles Éparses. The island lies east of Madagascar and north of Réunion. Both France and Mauritius claim sovereignty over this territory. France includes it in the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. It is categorized as the fifth district of these lands.

The island formed through volcanic activity in the distant past. Over time, the volcano eroded away. This process led to the development of an atoll ring of coral. An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef that surrounds a lagoon. Today, the island is roughly 2 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide. It covers an area of about 4.5 square kilometers. The land is mostly covered in scrub vegetation. This includes octopus bush and various low shrubs.

Environmental conditions on Tromelin are quite harsh. The island lacks significant sources of fresh water. Heavy winds sweep across the flat terrain day and night. In the winter, these winds are particularly sustained. During the summer, the island often faces cyclones and tropical storms. Because of these factors, plant life is poorly developed. Only grass and small shrubs like purslane grow there. The growth of these plants is often shaped by the dominant east winds.

Despite the harsh climate, the island is a vital habitat for many species. It is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. The island serves as a major breeding site for seabirds. Masked boobies and red-footed boobies both nest here. The masked boobies on Tromelin are a specific subspecies called Sula dactylatra melanops. The red-footed boobies represent the only polymorphic population in the region. This suggests the island has been geographically isolated for a long time.

The marine life around the island is also very diverse. The waters are rich with many different types of fish. The French Coral Reef Initiative has identified 26 different species of corals. Green sea turtles and hawksbill sea turtles use the island for nesting. However, the ecosystem faced threats from introduced species. Rats and mice arrived on the island via various shipwrecks. These invasive rats decimated the local seabird populations for many years. After humans eradicated the rats in 2005, the bird community recovered significantly. The number of breeding pairs grew from 353 to 4,758 within 17 years.

Tromelin has a profound and tragic history involving the ship Utile. In 1761, this French frigate ran onto the island's reefs.

The ship was transporting enslaved Malagasy people from Madagascar. A navigation error caused by conflicting charts led to the wreck. While some crew members escaped, many enslaved people drowned in the hold. A group of 60 Malagasy survivors was left on the island. They remained there alone for 15 years. They survived by building shelters from coral stones and maintaining a fire. They even built a lookout to watch for rescue ships.

Archaeologists have conducted several expeditions to study this history. Missions in 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2013 helped uncover how the survivors lived. They found traces of a kitchen with repaired copper containers. They also discovered tools like flint and tinder lighters. These objects show how the survivors managed to keep a fire lit without trees. These findings help researchers understand the extreme determination of the Malagasy people. Today, the island remains a site for scientific research and weather monitoring.
