A ravine is a special shape in the land.

It is a narrow valley with steep sides. Scientists say it is larger than a gully. However, it is still smaller than a canyon. These landforms are often called fluvial slope landforms. This means they are shaped by running water. Different places use different names for them. Some call them a glen or a gorge. In South Africa, people call them a kloof.

Ravines form through a process called erosion. This is when water wears away the earth. It often starts with a gully in hilly areas. Water runoff flows down steep slopes. Over time, the water cuts deep into the soil. A gully becomes a ravine when it reaches a great depth. Many ravines have streams that flow only sometimes. These are called intermittent streams. This happens because the ravine might be too small for a constant stream.

Changes in the land can happen very quickly. Ravine erosion causes a lot of land loss globally. This can be a hard job for farmers. It threatens their agricultural lands. When soil washes away, it can cause pollution. It can also lead to flooding in waterways. This happens when soil fills up the water paths. Deforestation can make this happen faster. Overgrazing by animals also speeds up the process. In Indian badlands, soil loss is very high.

Some of the most interesting ravines are on volcanoes. In Hawaii, the shield volcanoes shape the land. Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are two famous examples. Mauna Loa is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. These volcanoes have V-shaped ravines on their sides. These shapes form where there is Pahala ash. Mauna Kea is older than Mauna Loa. Because it is older, its ravines look more worn down. Rain and how water sinks into the ground are very important here.

Ravines can take many different shapes. Most of the V-shaped ravines come from streams. These streams cut into the ground over time. Eventually, some ravines become very deep systems. These deep cuts can show where groundwater moves. The deepest ones can even look U-shaped. These are called theatre-headed valleys. You can find ravines in many places. Some are in Sweden, Italy, or even Canada. They are a natural part of our moving world.
