Badlands are a very special kind of dry land.

These areas have steep slopes and very little plant life. They are often hard to walk across on foot. Most badlands are also not good for farming. You can find them on every continent except Antarctica. They usually form where there are loose sediments. These are materials that have not turned into hard rock yet.

Water is the main thing that shapes this land. Even if it does not rain often, the rain can be very heavy. This water cannot soak into the hard clay ground. Instead, the water flows over the surface in many small paths. These paths carve out deep gullies and ravines. This creates a landscape of many steep ridges. Scientists call this a high drainage density. It means there are many water paths in a small area.

Sometimes, hard rock sits on top of soft rock. This creates shapes like buttes or hoodoos.

The hard rock is called a caprock. It acts like a lid to protect the soft rock underneath. This prevents the soft parts from washing away too fast. Most badlands have very thin layers of soil on top. This top layer is called regolith. In dry places, this layer might look like a crust or even small bits of popcorn.

Most badlands happen because of nature. However, people can cause them to form too. This is called an anthropogenic badland. If animals eat too much grass, the plants disappear. If people clear the land or cause pollution, the soil washes away. For example, the Cheltenham Badlands in Ontario, Canada, were made by cattle grazing.

In Spain, the Las Médulas area was shaped by gold mining. These changes can happen very quickly once the plants are gone.

Many famous places around the world are badlands. In Argentina, there is a place called Valle de la Luna.

China has the Zhangye National Geopark, which is famous for colorful rocks. In the United States, you can visit Badlands National Park in South Dakota. This park erodes at a rate of about 1 inch per year. People often see badlands in old Western movies. They are beautiful and strange places that show how water moves the Earth.
