Mesa

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A mesa is a special kind of landform that stands out from the ground. It is an isolated hill or ridge with a very flat top. The sides of a mesa are bounded by steep cliffs called escarpments. These hills stand distinctly above the flat plains around them. The name comes from the Spanish word for "table." Geologist Kirk Bryan said in 1922 that they look like a table standing on a floor.

Mesas form through a way of working called differential erosion. This happens when different types of rock wear away at different speeds. A mesa has a top layer of hard rock called a caprock. This layer might be made of sandstone, limestone, or even lava flows. Under the caprock, there are softer layers like shale. The hard caprock protects the soft rock underneath it. This is why the top stays flat while the sides wear away.

Water plays a big part in how a mesa changes over time. Water can flow over the top or move through the ground. This water wears away the soft shale at the bottom of the cliffs. This process is called basal sapping. As the soft bottom layer disappears, the heavy top layer can no longer stay up. The cliffs then collapse and move backward. If the caprock wears away until it is very small, it becomes a butte.

There are many different sized mesas all over our world. In the Cockburn Range of Australia, some are as large as 500 square kilometers. In Germany, some are as small as 0.01 square kilometers. You can find them in many places like Arizona and Utah in the United States. Grand Mesa in Colorado is even known as the largest flat-topped mountain in the world. They are also found in places like Italy, Israel, and even the United Kingdom.

Mesas are not just found on Earth, but also in space. Scientists have seen mesas on the planet Mars. In a place called Noctis Labyrinthus, there are steep-walled mesas and knobs. These might form from ice-related processes in the ground. On Mars, these landforms are found in a zone called fretted terrain. This shows that the same kinds of amazing shapes can happen on other worlds too.
