Geographers use a rule to tell them apart from mesas. A mesa has a top that is wider than its height. A butte is different from a mesa. Its top is narrower than its height. This makes them look like tall towers.

Buttes form through a way it works called erosion. This happens when wind and water wear things away. First, a hard layer called caprock sits on top. This hard rock protects the softer rock underneath. The wind rubs against the soft rock. This leaves the hard top standing alone.

As the top wears down, pieces fall. These piles of rock are called talus slopes.

The word butte comes from a French word. That word means a knoll. A knoll is a small hill. People use this name often in the Western United States. You can find them in the Southwest. Some buttes even have different names. For example, Courthouse Rock is a name in Nebraska. These shapes make them great landmarks for travelers.

Many famous buttes exist in the United States. The Mittens are in Monument Valley. They sit on the Utah and Arizona state line. These buttes were in seven movies by John Ford.

Devils Tower is in Wyoming. It is a very well-known landmark. It is made of igneous rock. Most other buttes are made of sandstone or limestone.

Buttes are part of the big world around us. You might see them in movies or photos. Thumb Butte is a landmark in Arizona. It overlooks the city of Prescott. Some buttes are even mountains, like Crested Butte in Colorado. Others are islands, like Elephant Butte in New Mexico.

These landforms show how the earth changes over time.
