A mesa is a flat-topped hill or ridge.

It stands high above the land around it. The word mesa comes from a Spanish word for table. This is because they look like tables standing on a floor.

Mesas form through differential erosion. This is a way that different rocks wear away at different speeds. A mesa has a top layer of very hard rock. We call this a caprock. This hard layer protects the softer rock underneath. The soft rock is often shale. Shale wears away easily from wind and water. This creates steep cliffs on the sides of the mesa.

Sometimes, water flows around the rock layers. This wears away the soft shale at the bottom. When the bottom rock is gone, the top cliffs can no longer stay up. They fall down and the cliffs move back. If the caprock wears away until it is very small, it becomes a butte.
