Badlands are a special type of dry land.

They have steep slopes and very few plants. Most badlands form from soft rocks like mudrock.

Water is the main reason these lands change. Even if rain is rare, it often falls very hard. This heavy rain cannot soak into the hard clay. Instead, the water runs over the surface. It cuts deep paths called gullies and ravines. These paths create a bumpy landscape of ridges. This pattern is called a high drainage density. It means there are many water paths in a small area.

Sometimes, hard sandstone sits on top of soft rock. This creates shapes called buttes or hoodoos.

The hard rock acts like a caprock. It protects the soft rock underneath from washing away.

Most badlands are natural. However, people can make them too. Overgrazing by animals can destroy plants. This lets the soil wash away quickly.
