It is smaller than a canyon. It is larger than a gully. A gully becomes a ravine when it grows very deep.

Water makes ravines. It works through erosion. This means water wears away the dirt and rock.

Water flows down steep hills. It cuts deep into the ground. Sometimes a stream flows in a ravine. Other times the water only flows once in a while. This happens if the ravine is not large enough to hold a constant stream.

Ravines can change the land. They cause land loss. They can also lead to flooding. This happens when soil washes away into waterways. Cutting down trees can make ravines form faster.

Some ravines are found on volcanoes. In Hawaii, ravines have V-shaped sides. This shape comes from rain and streams. Some of the deepest ravines are U-shaped. These look like a theater stage. They can even show where water moves deep underground.
