This can happen very slowly. It can also happen very fast. Many things cause erosion. Water, ice, wind, and even animals can move soil. Humans also cause it through many activities.

Rain is a big cause of water erosion. First, a raindrop hits the ground. This is called splash erosion. It makes a tiny hole and kicks soil up. Next, water flows over the land. This is sheet erosion. It moves soil in thin layers. Then, water forms small paths called rills.

If the water flows even faster, it makes deep paths called gullies.

Wind also moves soil, especially in dry places. The wind can pick up loose bits and carry them away. This is called deflation. Wind can also hit surfaces with flying bits. This is called abrasion.

Losing soil is a big problem. It makes it hard to grow food on farms. It can also make water dirty. When soil washes into rivers, it can hurt the water.
