If the water flows even faster, it makes deep paths called gullies.

Finally, gully erosion occurs. This is the most severe stage, where runoff flows in narrow channels and removes soil to great depths.

Rivers and streams also shape the land through continuous water flow. This can happen through valley erosion, which deepens and extends a valley. In early stages, the erosion is vertical, creating V-shaped valleys. As the stream reaches a base level, it switches to lateral erosion. This widens the valley floor and creates a floodplain.

Most erosion in streams happens during floods. During these times, water carries a large sediment load. It also uses a process called traction. In traction, pebbles and boulders act as abrasive tools that wear away the surface as they move.

Wind erosion is especially common in arid and semi-arid regions. It works through two primary methods: deflation and abrasion. Deflation is when the wind picks up and carries away loose particles. This includes surface creep, where heavy particles roll; saltation, where particles bounce; and suspension, where tiny particles stay in the air for long distances.

Saltation is responsible for 50% to 70% of wind erosion. Abrasion occurs when airborne particles strike and wear down surfaces. In the Great Plains, soil loss during droughts can be 6,100 times greater than in wet years. This makes wind erosion a major cause of land degradation worldwide.

Gravity also plays a role through mass movement. This is the downward movement of rock and sediment on slopes. It often moves material from high elevations to lower areas. Landslides are a common type of mass movement. There is also slumping, which happens on steep hillsides, often in clay materials.

Soil erosion causes both "on-site" and "off-site" problems. On-site impacts include lower agricultural productivity and loss of nutrients. This makes it harder for farmers to grow crops. Off-site effects include the sedimentation of waterways and the eutrophication of water bodies.
