Understanding these processes is vital for landslide mitigation. This refers to policies and practices used to reduce the risk of natural disasters.

Landslides happen when a slope shifts from a stable state to an unstable state. This change is driven by gravity, which is the primary force behind the movement. Specifically, instability occurs due to a decrease in the shear strength of the slope material. Shear strength is the internal resistance that keeps the material in place. Alternatively, instability can be caused by an increase in the shear stress borne by the material.

When these forces are out of balance, the material begins to move.

Many natural factors can trigger a slope to fail. An increase in water content is a very common cause. This happens through rain water infiltration, melting snow, or melting glaciers. As water fills the spaces in the soil, it increases the pore water pressure. This pressure pushes against the particles of the soil, making it harder for them to stay together. Other natural causes include physical and chemical weathering. This includes processes like repeated freezing and thawing or the dissolution of minerals.

Earthquakes can also cause direct instability by shaking the ground or inducing soil liquefaction.

Human activities often aggravate these natural processes. Deforestation is a major factor because it removes the vegetation that stabilizes the soil. Without deep-rooted plants, the soil is less able to stay attached to the bedrock. Construction and urbanization also change how much water infiltrates the ground. Resource exploitation, such as mining and blasting, creates vibrations that can destabilize slopes.

A slide happens when a body of material moves over an inclined surface or a shear zone.

Other movements involve more fluid-like behavior. Spreads occur when a layer of material cracks and expands laterally. Flows involve the movement of fluidized material, which can be dry or very wet. A mudflow is a specific type of flow made of wet soil and debris. Earthflows move mostly fine-grained material like clay or silt. These can move very slowly, sometimes only 1 millimeter per year.

In contrast, a rock avalanche, or sturzstrom, is a large and very fast-moving flow. These are rare but can be extremely destructive because they can travel very far over flat or even slightly uphill terrain.

Some scientists believe a unique mechanism helps large rock avalanches move so fast. As the mass moves, friction may cause rapid heating in the shear zone. This heat might turn existing water into vapor. This vapor could build up pressure and create a "hovercraft effect" that helps the mass glide. Additionally, the friction might grind rock into a nanometer-size mineral powder. This powder could act as a lubricant, further reducing resistance.
