Landslide

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A landslide is a type of mass wasting where ground moves down a slope.

This can involve rocks, soil, or even mud. Gravity is the main force that pulls these materials down. Landslides can happen in many places. They occur on steep mountains or gentle coastal cliffs. They can even happen deep underwater, which are called submarine landslides.

Understanding these events helps us reduce the risk of natural disasters.

Landslides happen when a slope changes from stable to unstable. This usually occurs because the strength of the material decreases. Or, the stress on the material increases. Many natural things can trigger this change. Heavy rain can soak the ground and increase water pressure. Snow or glaciers melting can also add water to the soil. Earthquakes can shake the ground and cause soil to act like a liquid.

Even volcanic eruptions or temperature changes can cause movement.

Humans can also make landslides more likely to happen. Activities like mining or blasting can shake the earth. Cutting down trees, called deforestation, removes roots that hold soil in place. Building roads often requires cutting into the shape of a slope. This can make the land less steady. Urban sprawl and farming also change how water moves through the soil.

These human actions can make natural events more frequent.

Scientists use different ways to group these movements. In 1978, a geologist named David Varnes created a new way to classify them.

His system was updated many times by other researchers. One type is a fall, where chunks of rock drop through the air. Another is a topple, where blocks rotate away from a face. A slide happens when material moves over a surface. These can be planar, which are flat, or rotational, which are spoon-shaped.

Some movements are much faster and more liquid than others. Flows happen when material acts like a fluid. A mudflow is a type of flow made of wet soil. Earthflows move mostly fine material and can be very slow. Some move only 1 millimeter per year.

Other flows, like rock avalanches, can be very fast and destructive. They can even move over flat ground or slightly uphill. These fast movements might happen because friction creates heat. This heat can make water turn into vapor and help the mass glide.
