Aeolian processes

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Wind can change the face of our planet. Scientists call these changes aeolian processes. This name comes from Aeolus, the Greek god of wind.

Wind shapes the Earth in three main ways. First, it can erode the land. Erosion is when wind picks up and removes loose bits of dirt or sand. This happens in three ways. Large grains can roll along the ground. This is called surface creep. Smaller grains can bounce across the surface. This is called saltation. Very tiny bits can float high in the air. This is called suspension.

Second, wind can wear down rocks. This is called abrasion. Sand grains hit rocks like tiny sandblasters. This can make rocks look smooth or pitted.

Some rocks even grow long ridges called yardangs.

Third, wind can move material to new places. This is called transport. When the wind slows down, it drops the material. This is called deposition. This often makes sand dunes.

Wind can even carry dust across oceans. Dust from the Sahara Desert travels to the Amazon basin. This helps plants grow far away.
