Regolith is a loose layer that covers solid rock. It is a mix of dust and broken rocks.

You can find it on Earth, the Moon, and Mars. It is even on small asteroids.

On Earth, the top part of regolith is called soil. Most plants need soil to grow. Animals also use it to build homes or dig.

Engineers study regolith to build strong roads and buildings. It can also hold water in deep layers called aquifers.

On the Moon, regolith forms in a different way. Tiny space rocks hit the surface. These hits break up the rock into dust.

This layer can be very thick. On the Moon, it can be 15 meters deep.

On Mars, the regolith has much dust. This dust can float in the air. It makes the Martian sky look red. On the moon, scientists sometimes call the fine parts lunar soil.
