Gravity pulls rocks and soil down slopes. This is called mass wasting. It is different from wind or water erosion. In mass wasting, gravity is the main force.

Some movements are very slow. We call this soil creep. It moves soil just a tiny bit at a time. This slow way can bend tree trunks. It can also tilt fences or break pipes.

Other movements are very fast. A landslide is a quick move of rock and earth. If there is more water, it might become a mudflow.

Many things can cause these moves. Steep slopes and heavy rain help. Even earthquakes can start a landslide.

Mass wasting happens in many places. It happens on Earth and under the sea. We see it on Mars and Venus too. Even moons like Io have it.

People use ways to stay safe. They build walls or dams to catch rocks. Planting trees also helps hold the soil in place.
