Desert

A desert is a landscape defined by very little precipitation. This means it receives very little rain, snow, mist, or fog. About one-third of the Earth's land surface is arid or semi-arid.

Some deserts are very hot, while others are polar deserts. These cold deserts exist in places like the Arctic and Antarctica. Antarctica is the largest cold desert on our planet. It is made of about 98% thick ice and 2% barren rock.

Deserts are important because they help moderate the Earth's temperature. They reflect more incoming light than forests or the sea do.

Deserts change through many different weathering processes. Large changes in temperature between day and night strain the rocks. This causes the rocks to break into smaller pieces.

When rare rain falls on hot rocks, it can cause them to shatter. The wind then picks up these particles of sand and dust. This wind can create large, billowing dunes or flat sheets of sand.

Sometimes, the wind blows all the fine material away. This leaves behind flat, stony plains called desert pavements.

Wind can even smooth down rocks by striking them with sand grains.

Life in the desert requires special adaptations to survive the harsh environment. Plants are often tough and wiry with very small leaves. Many have a water-resistant cuticle or sharp spines to stop animals from eating them.

Some plants grow and die within a few weeks of rainfall. Others live for years using deep root systems to find underground moisture.

Animals must also find ways to stay cool. Many are nocturnal, meaning they stay underground or in the shade during the day.

They are very efficient at conserving the water they get from food.

Humans have lived near deserts for thousands of years. Nomads often moved herds to find grazing land.

Oases provide spots where people can live a more settled life. These oases occur where underground water sources like springs or aquifers reach the surface.

Historically, many trade routes crossed deserts like the Sahara. Caravans used camels to carry goods like salt, gold, and ivory.

Today, people also use deserts for mineral extraction and solar energy. The Imperial Valley in California shows how irrigation can make barren land productive.

There are many different types of deserts around the world. The Sahara is the largest hot desert.

It is so dry that some mountains there have no glaciers. In other places, rare rain can cause a flash flood.

These floods move through dry channels called wadis or arroyos. When lakes in these basins dry up, they leave behind salt pans or flat areas called playas.
