The Gobi is a huge, cold desert and grassland region.

It sits across southern Mongolia and North China. This desert is the sixth-largest in the whole world. The name comes from the Mongolian word "Gov", which means dryland. In Chinese, the name refers to rocky areas rather than sandy ones. Much of the Gobi is made of bare, exposed rock.

Some parts do have large sand dunes, like the Khongoryn Els.

The climate here is full of big changes. It is a cold desert because it sits on a high plateau. This high ground helps keep the temperatures low. You might see frost or even snow on the dunes. In the winter, winds blow snow from the Siberian Steppes into the region. The weather can change very fast in just one day.

Temperatures can swing by many degrees in a single 24-hour span.

History and science lovers find many treasures here. The Gobi is a great place for finding old fossils. In 1923, explorers found the very first dinosaur eggs here.

These eggs were found in the area known as the Flaming Cliffs. Scientists also work in the Nemegt Basin to find fossils. They have found early mammals and stone tools there. Some of these tools are 100,000 years old.

Many unique living things call this dry land home.

You can find wild Bactrian camels walking across the landscape. Other animals include the Mongolian wild ass and the black-tailed gazelle. Some rare animals like snow leopards and Gobi bears live here too. Lizards are very common and well-adapted to the heat. Most plants are small shrubs that can live without much water.

Humans have always moved through this vast space.

Many ancient trade routes cross the desert. Some of these paths have been used for thousands of years. You can even see remnants of the Great Wall of China here. Today, people use the land for raising livestock like goats. This is done by nomadic herders to get cashmere wool.
