These spots are rare and very precious. They provide a home for animals and help plants grow. Most oases are actually artificial, meaning humans help create or maintain them. They depend on a natural source of water to survive. This water might be in a pool on the surface. It could also be deep underground in a place called an aquifer.

Oases work through a special way of managing water. Some form naturally when rain creates seasonal lakes. Other types happen when water from underground rivers reaches the surface. In many places, people use clever systems to move water. They might dig wells or long underground channels. In Oman, people use tunnel systems called aflaj to tap into water.

Some places use raised channels to soak the soil. This helps farmers grow food in a very dry land. Humans must constantly work to keep these ecosystems healthy.

People have lived in oases for thousands of years. Archeologists found evidence of people living at Ein Gedi in 6,000 BC. There is also evidence of life at Al-Ahsa on the Arabian Peninsula. Oases were vital for famous trade routes like the Silk Road. Traders used communities like Samarkand in Uzbekistan to find water.

Caravans had to travel from one water hole to the next. Controlling an oasis often meant controlling the trade routes too.

Many important oases exist in the Middle East and North Africa. These areas cover about 1% of the land. Even so, they support about 10 million people. There are 90 major oases within the Sahara Desert. In the United States, a different kind called a Palm Oasis exists. These can be found in California, Arizona, Baja California, and Sonora. They are known for having the native California fan palm.

An oasis uses three layers of plants to stay cool. This is called the oasis effect. The top layer is made of tall date palms. These palms provide shade for the middle layer. This middle layer includes trees like figs, olives, and peaches. The bottom layer has vegetables and grains like wheat.

This setup reduces the heat and keeps the air moist. This helps crops grow even when the desert is very hot.
