Masonry is the craft of building structures with materials like stone, brick, or concrete.

It can also refer to the building units themselves, such as a single brick or stone. Masons often use mortar to bind these units together. Mortar is a paste that helps the pieces stick and stay in place.

This type of construction is known for being very durable. However, how long a building lasts depends on the quality of the workmanship. The pattern used to assemble the units also affects how strong the structure will be.

There are many ways that masonry works to hold up a building. In structural applications, masonry creates walls, columns, beams, and foundations.

Some blocks, called Concrete Masonry Units or CMUs, have hollow cores. These empty spaces can be filled with concrete or steel rebar. Doing this adds much more strength to the structure.

This process helps the building handle different types of pressure. In other cases, masonry is used for non-structural things like fireplaces or chimneys. It can also be used as a veneer, which is a decorative outer layer.

People have used masonry for a very long time. It is one of the oldest building crafts in the world.

It even exists in history from before people began writing things down. You can see examples of ancient masonry in the Egyptian pyramids.

The Romans also used it to build great aqueducts. In the middle ages, masons used these skills to build large cathedrals. Over time, the techniques changed to meet new architectural needs.

Different styles of masonry use different types of stones and bricks. For example, ashlar masonry uses stones that are neatly dressed or cut.

Rubble masonry uses stones that are irregularly shaped instead. When using bricks, masons create patterns called bonds.

A common bond might have a special row of bricks every sixth layer. Some walls, called crinkle-crankle walls, follow a wavy path. These serpentine walls are actually harder to tip over than straight ones. This makes them very useful for certain types of building.

Masonry is a helpful material for many reasons. It is non-combustible, which means it can protect a building from fire.

It also has high thermal mass, which helps control temperature. This means it can hold onto warmth or coolness. However, masonry can be very heavy and needs stable ground.

If the soil is not firm, the heavy walls might crack. Also, masonry does not work well during earthquakes. This is because the units rely mostly on their weight to stay in place.
