Masonry is the craft of building with stone, brick, or concrete.

A person who does this is called a mason. Masons use a thick paste called mortar to bind parts together. This helps them stick to each other.

Masonry is very old. People used it to build Egyptian pyramids and Roman aqueducts.

There are many ways to use these materials. Some walls are structural. This means they hold up the building. Other walls are just for looks. We call these veneer systems.

A veneer is a thin layer of stone or brick on the outside. It makes a building look nice without holding the weight.

Some builders use concrete blocks. These are called Concrete Masonry Units, or CMUs. They are larger than bricks. Many CMUs have hollow cores, which are empty spaces in the middle. You can fill these holes with concrete or steel to make them much stronger.

Masonry can also be very heavy. It must be built on stable ground. If the ground moves, the walls might crack.
