Masonry is the skilled craft of constructing structures using stone, brick, concrete, or similar materials.

The term can describe the building units themselves, like a single stone or brick, or the process of assembling them. Masons often use mortar, a binding paste, to join these units together. This method of construction is highly durable and has been used for thousands of years. However, the final strength depends on the material quality, the mortar used, and the assembly pattern.

To understand how masonry works, we must look at how units interact. In many structures, the weight of the masonry provides stability against lateral movements. This means the heavy mass of the blocks helps keep the building from shifting sideways. Some builders use dry set masonry, which does not use mortar at all.

In these cases, the friction between interlocking blocks provides the necessary strength. Some blocks even have grooves to help them grip one another more tightly.

There are many different types of masonry based on the materials used. Stonemasonry can be categorized into ashlar masonry or rubble masonry. Ashlar masonry uses dressed stones, which are stones that have been precisely cut or shaped.

Rubble masonry uses irregularly shaped stones instead. Another common type involves Concrete Masonry Units, often called CMUs. These are larger than standard bricks and often feature hollow cores. These cores allow for specialized construction techniques to increase strength.

Modern masonry often incorporates steel to handle different forces. While masonry is excellent at handling compression, it can struggle with tension or lateral forces. To fix this, builders fill the hollow cores of CMUs with concrete and steel rebar.

They may also use a bond beam, which is a top course of blocks filled with concrete and steel. This creates a strong, reinforced horizontal element. In some modern systems, steel-reinforced elements allow for much thinner and taller building designs.

Masonry has a very long history that predates written records. We can see its impact in the construction of the Egyptian pyramids.

The Romans used masonry to build massive aqueducts for moving water. During the medieval period, masons used these skills to create grand cathedrals. Over time, techniques evolved to meet changing cultural norms and architectural needs. Since the mid-20th century, the integration of steel has fundamentally changed how masonry performs.

Using masonry offers several specific advantages for a building. Because it is a non-combustible product, it provides excellent protection against fire.

Masonry also provides high thermal mass, which helps regulate a building's temperature. This means the material can absorb and store heat or coolness. Additionally, masonry walls are highly resistant to projectiles, such as debris from tornadoes or hurricanes. However, the weight of masonry requires very stable, compacted soil to prevent cracking.

Despite these strengths, masonry has certain structural limitations. Most masonry walls rely heavily on their own weight to stay upright. Because each unit is only loosely connected by a thin layer of mortar, they can struggle during earthquakes. When the ground shakes horizontally, the lack of strong connections can lead to collapses. This is especially true for heavier masonry buildings. Furthermore, extreme weather can cause damage through freeze-thaw cycles, where expansion and contraction crack the material.
