Building materials are the substances used to construct structures like homes, bridges, and habitats.

These materials can be found naturally in the environment or manufactured by humans. Natural substances include clay, rocks, sand, wood, and even organic matter like twigs and leaves. Many man-made products are also used, ranging from simple mixtures to highly synthetic materials. The production and use of these materials is a massive global industry. It is divided into specialty trades such as carpentry, plumbing, roofing, and insulation.

When engineers and builders select materials, they must consider several types of costs. The initial economic cost is the purchase price of the material. However, builders often weigh this against the lifetime cost. For example, a metal roof is more expensive to install than asphalt shingles. Yet, a metal roof lasts longer, making it cheaper over many years. Builders also consider maintenance costs and the risk of damage from fire or wind. If a material is not as durable as promised, its value decreases quickly.

Ecological costs are another vital part of the selection process. These include macro costs, which occur at the source of the material. This happens during mining, logging, petroleum extraction, or manufacturing. It also occurs during the transportation of raw goods and finished products. Micro costs involve indoor air pollution caused by the off-gassing of certain materials. Scientists also track the carbon footprint, which is the total greenhouse gas emissions produced during a material's life. A life-cycle analysis helps determine how to best reuse, recycle, or dispose of construction waste.

Social costs focus on the human impact of the building industry. These include the health and safety of people who produce and transport materials. Globalization has changed how these costs are distributed across the world. When manufacturing facilities close in one area, local people may lose jobs and specialized skills. There are also important questions regarding fair trade and labor rights in global manufacturing. Additionally, the biological quality of a building can affect the health of the people living inside it.

Many building materials rely on thermal mass to regulate temperature. Thermal mass is the ability of a material to absorb, store, and release heat. Clay and stone are excellent examples of this. These materials hold heat or cold and release it slowly over time.

Because earthen walls change temperature slowly, they can keep a home cool in summer and warm in winter. This can reduce the need for artificial heating or cooling. However, because they change temperature so slowly, it may actually take more energy to change the temperature quickly in an earthen house than in a wood-built one.

Bio-based materials are a major category of natural construction supplies. These are often plant-based and come from renewable resources like agriculture or the wood industry. Plant fibers can be combined with binders to provide structural, thermal, or hydric functions.

When plant particles are added to concrete, they change its properties. Increasing the amount of plant fiber increases porosity and moisture buffering capacity. However, it also decreases the density and compressive strength of the material. Some bio-based insulation is hygroscopic, meaning it can regulate moisture and water vapor permeability.

Historically, humans have used a wide variety of local, natural materials. Some cultures built brush structures using branches, twigs, and bark.

A common ancient technique is wattle and daub, where clay or dung fills a woven brush frame. In northern climates, the Inuit used snow and ice to create igloo and quinzhee shelters. Clay has also been used for millennia, either as wet-laid walls or as dried mud bricks called adobe.

Even stone has a long history of use. In Dartmoor National Park, UK, Neolithic settlers built circular huts from loose granite. An estimated 5,000 of these granite remains can still be seen today.

Modern construction uses many of these ancient principles with new technology. For instance, compressed earth blocks are a modern version of the ancient mud brick. These can be manufactured in centralized brickworks and transported to many different sites.

Sand remains a fundamental component, used with cement or lime to create mortar and plaster. It is also a key part of concrete mixes. In areas with high sand content, builders may use Sandcrete blocks because they are cheaper than fired clay bricks. From ancient stone pyramids to modern reinforced concrete, the evolution of building materials continues to shape our world.
