Engineers must make sure buildings are strong and steady. They study how much weight a building can hold. They also check if it can stand up during an earthquake.

This work is very old. In 2700 B.C., a man named Imhotep built a step pyramid.

Pyramids are very stable because of their shape. They can also be made very large. Long ago, builders used what they knew from past work. They did not have math rules for strength.

Today, engineers use math and science. They use computers to help them design. They can work on many things. Some design tall buildings.

Others design ships, planes, or even medical tools. They must be creative to use materials well. This keeps our structures safe and strong.
