For thousands of years, people have used stone for many things. They built huge temples, strong fortifications, and even entire cities. Some of the most famous stone works include the Egyptian pyramids and the Great Wall of China.

Even though we use steel and concrete today, stone is still very special. It is often stronger than concrete when being squeezed by weight. It also uses much less energy to make. This helps the Earth because making stone releases less carbon dioxide.

Making a stone building involves many different steps and workers. First, a quarryman works at the source of the stone. They cut or split large blocks of rock from the ground.

Next, a sawyer mason takes these blocks to cut them into the right size. They often use saws coated in diamond to get through the hard material. A sawyer mason might look at grain patterns to see how the stone will split. After that, a banker mason works in a workshop.

They use tools to shape the stones into specific designs. They follow a plan to make sure every piece fits the building perfectly.

Once the stones are ready, they must be put into place. A fixer mason is the person who travels to the building site. They use lifting tackle to move the heavy pieces.

They use mortar or grout to hold the stones together. Sometimes they even use metal parts like cramps or dowels to keep things steady. Some masons are also artists known as carver masons. They use their skills to turn stone into art. They might carve shapes of animals, plants, or other beautiful patterns.

People have used different ways to stack stone for a long time. One old way is called the trabeated system. This uses a beam, or lintel, laid across two stone posts.

Another way is called arch masonry. This creates a space underneath a stone span. There is also a method called dry stone masonry. This means building walls without using any mortar at all.

These walls stay up using only the shape of the stones and friction. Some people even use massive boulders to build walls, which is called cyclopean masonry.

Today, stonemasonry is changing with new technology. Modern masons use computers to design very complex shapes. This is called digital stereotomy.

They can use these digital models to cut stones with great precision. Some new buildings use a stone exoskeleton. This means the stone is part of the outside frame of the building.

Other methods use stone veneer, which is a thin layer of stone. This thin layer is attached to a wall to make it look beautiful. Stone is also being used with new materials like engineered wood. This helps make building in a way that is better for our world.
