These workers use great skill and talent. They can reach the same levels as fine artists.

Making things by hand is a special way to work. This is often called artisanal work. It is different from an industrial process. Industrial processes use large machines in factories. Artisans use their own hands and tools.

You might see this word in stores today. It describes handmade bread, cheese, or textiles. It can also describe special drinks. People use this word to show how items are made.

Artisans have been important for a very long time. They were the main makers before the Industrial Revolution. In ancient Greece, they were very active. They often went to places called agoras. Many artisans built their small workshops nearby.

During the Middle Ages, they were a big group. They were not the same as unskilled laborers. They were people who provided special services or goods.

In the Middle Ages, artisans had three main roles. Some were masters who ran their own businesses. These masters had a high status in their towns. They often organized into groups called guilds. Other artisans were called journeymen. There were also apprentices who were still learning. This was a structured way for people to work. It helped them grow in their specific crafts.

In Japan, the word for artisan is shokunin. This word means more than just having skill. It shows a deep pride in one's work. A shokunin feels a social duty to help others. They work for the good of all people. They even show thanks to their tools. At New Year, they place tools in a box called a tokonoma. They might add rice cakes and a tangerine to the box. This shows gratitude for their tools.
