People value these items for many different reasons. They might be beautiful to look at or very rare. Some items have a deep historical meaning. They show us how people lived in a previous era. Most people say an item is an antique if it is at least 100 years old. Some people use the word loosely for any old thing. However, words like vintage or collectible describe items that are old but not 100 years old.

You can find antiques in many places. People shop at antique shops or estate sales. Some buy them at auction houses or online. You might even find them at a garage sale or a yard sale. Some people shop in special antique districts. People buy these things to use, to give as gifts, or to make a profit. Some people even make new things look old. They use special paint or wear things down to make them look antique.

History helps us define what an antique really is.

In the United States, a law called the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act helped people know what was real. It looked at items made before the year 1830. This was around the time mass production began in the U.S. An art critic named Edward Lucie-Smith wrote about this in 1979. He noted that some dealers thought nothing made after 1830 was an antique. But collectors later changed this by loving styles like Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

Different cultures have their own ways of marking history.

In China, antiques often have a red seal called a chop. An owner places this seal on the item. Experts can read these chops to see who owned the piece before. The old Chinese government even used red sealing wax to verify dates. This helped collectors know the item was real. Today, the government of the People's Republic of China also has its own rules. They work to protect the definition of a Chinese antique.

Many people love to collect antique furniture.

This includes items like dining tables, chairs, and chests. These pieces are often made from beautiful woods. Common woods include mahogany, oak, pine, and walnut. In Asia, many Chinese pieces are made from elm wood. Each wood has its own color and grain. Collectors care for these items so they keep their value. New furniture usually loses value quickly, but antiques can stay valuable for a long time.
