Cultural heritage is a special gift passed down from past generations.

It is not just everything from the past, though. Instead, it is what a society chooses to keep and value. This heritage helps people remember their history and their identity. It can be something you can touch or something you experience.

By saving these things, we show that the past matters to us today. This connection helps people feel a sense of belonging to their community.

There are three main ways we group heritage. First is tangible culture, which includes physical objects.

This is split into things that stay put, like buildings or monuments, and things that move, like books or clothing. Second is intangible culture, which is harder to save.

It includes things like language, folklore, and social traditions. Third is natural heritage, which covers the environment.

This includes special landscapes, plants, and animals, which scientists call biodiversity.

People have worked to protect these treasures for a long time. In the 1700s, a ruler named Maria Theresa made rules about heritage.

Later, the Congress of Vienna in 1814 and 1815 asked that art not be taken away during wars. In 1863, the Lieber Code set rules for the Union Army during wartime. The Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907 also helped create laws to protect cultural property. Even in 1954, a special agreement was signed to protect art and science during conflicts. These steps help keep history safe from damage or theft.

Many groups work together to make sure heritage stays safe.

Organizations like UNESCO and Blue Shield International lead these efforts. They help prevent things like looting at archaeological sites or the theft of art from museums. Protecting heritage is also important for the economy.

Many local communities rely on tourism to help their towns grow. When people travel to see old sites, it brings value to the area. This shows how history and modern life can work together.

Today, we even have digital heritage to help us.

We use computers to save texts, sounds, and images for the future. This includes things that were born on a computer, like software. We can even use 3D scanning to study old items, like Graeco-Roman masks.

While digital tools are amazing, the real objects are still special. Touching a real object is a way to truly connect with the past. Even though objects change over time, we keep working to preserve them for everyone.
