UNESCO helps people learn to read and write. It also works to protect the history of different cultures. It even helps protect the freedom of news and information. This work helps all people live together in a better way.

There are many ways that UNESCO helps the world. They support projects that give people technical training. They also help protect the history of different regions. One very important job is managing World Heritage Sites.

These are special places in nature or history that belong to everyone. UNESCO also works to make sure science can help the planet. They help countries share ideas about the environment. This helps people plan for a healthy future.

UNESCO began in 1945 after World War II ended. The war showed that nations needed to talk more. Before UNESCO, there was a group called the ICIC.

That group had famous members like Albert Einstein and Marie Curie. The ICIC helped nations share scientific and cultural ideas. After the war, leaders wanted a stronger way to cooperate. A man named Rab Butler helped develop the ideas for UNESCO. In 1946, Julian Huxley became the first Director-General.

UNESCO has done many big things over the years. In 1960, they started a campaign to save monuments in Nubia.

They moved 22 monuments so water would not ruin them. In 1972, they created rules to protect cultural and natural heritage. This led to the first World Heritage List in 1978. They also work hard to fight racism. In 1955, South Africa left the group because of this work. However, they rejoined in 1994 after Nelson Mandela took leadership.

Today, UNESCO is a very large organization. It has 194 member states and 12 associate members.

Its main headquarters is located in Paris, France. It also has 53 regional offices around the world. The group is led by a Director-General. A large meeting called the General Conference sets the budget. This meeting happens twice every year. This helps all the member countries stay organized and work together.
