Collecting is the hobby of finding and keeping special items.

A collector spends time seeking, locating, and acquiring objects they find interesting. They also work to organize, catalog, and display their items. Some people collect things made by humans, like postage stamps or nutcracker dolls.

Other people prefer to collect natural objects like seashells, rocks, or butterflies. Some collectors are generalists who collect many different things. Others are called completists because they want every single item in a set.

There are different ways to group a collection. Some people collect based on a specific theme or a certain type of object. Others might collect items because of who used to own them. You might see a collector who wants one item from every country in the world. Some collectors want to keep their items in perfect, pristine condition. Other collectors actually use the things they have gathered. The value of these items can change over time. This value is often found in a secondary market where buyers and sellers meet.

Age is a very important part of collecting. If a manufactured item is at least 100 years old, it is called an antique. For example, U.S. Customs says an antique must be over 100 years old to be imported. Items that are older but not yet 100 years old are called vintage. The website Etsy says vintage items must be at least 20 years old. Some items are called ephemera if they were once everyday objects that are now rare. Collectors often use price guides to see what items are worth. The first price guide was the Stanley Gibbons catalogue from November 1865.

Collecting has a very long history that goes back thousands of years. In Mesopotamia, royalty and elites were known to collect things in the 3rd millennium BCE. The Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt collected books at the Library of Alexandria. During the Renaissance, the Medici family in Florence collected art to help artists work freely. Many famous museums, like the Metropolitan in New York, started as private collections. In the 16th century, scholars often kept "cabinets of curiosities" filled with unusual items.

This hobby can change how a person feels and thinks. It can be a relaxing way to spend time and prevent boredom. Collecting can also help you learn and become an expert on a subject. It can even help you make new friends who like the same things. Some people use the internet to find other enthusiasts around the world. For some, collecting is a part of who they are. It can show their personal taste or show which community they belong to. The excitement of finding a rare item can even trigger a reward in the brain.
