Philately is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It is also the joy of collecting and appreciating stamps. You do not even need to own stamps to be a philatelist. Some stamps are very rare or live only in museums.

People enjoy this hobby for many different reasons. It can be a way to learn about the world. Some people focus on the art or the history of mail.

There are many ways to study a stamp. Traditional philately looks at how a stamp is made. This includes the design and the type of paper used. Experts check the printing method and the gum on the back. They also look at the perforations, which are the little holes on the edges.

Collectors use special tools to do this work. They use stamp tongs, which are like tweezers, to handle them safely. They also use magnifying glasses and tools to measure the edges.

This hobby has a long and interesting history. Postage stamps first appeared in 1840. Some believe the first philatelist was a person who studied the very first stamps. In 1855, a postmaster in Paris named Mansen sold a large collection. This sale helped stamp merchants begin to emerge.

By the end of the 1800s, hundreds of thousands of people were collecting stamps. Some countries even started museums to keep their national collections safe.

As more stamps were made, the hobby grew. People started to specialize in certain areas. Some collectors only look at one part of the world. Others focus on specific themes, which is called topical philately. They might collect stamps showing birds, ships, or even space.

There is even a branch called aerophilately for studying airmail. Some people even study stamps connected to outer space.

Philately has become a global activity. In the mid-1970s, between 150 and 200 million people were involved. Many countries celebrate a special Stamp Day to show interest in mail. In 1926, an international group called the FIP was founded. They organize big exhibitions where people meet to share their finds. Even today, the world holds huge events like the World Stamp Championship. It remains a way for people to connect through the history of letters.
