When you want to send an envelope or a box, you pay a fee. This fee covers the cost of moving and protecting your mail. You stick the stamp onto the face of your item. Then, the postal system uses a postmark to mark the stamp. This mark shows the date and where the mail started. It also stops anyone from using the same stamp twice.

Most stamps have a few important parts on them. They usually show the name of the country that made them. They also show a denomination, which is the value or price of the stamp. Many stamps feature beautiful pictures of people, places, or special events. These images often show the traditions and values of a nation. Stamps are printed on special paper that is often rectangular. Some are even shaped like triangles. The back of the paper has glue, which can be a sticky gum or a self-adhesive layer.

Before stamps, sending mail was a difficult job for post offices. In the United Kingdom, the person receiving the mail had to pay the cost. This caused problems if the person did not want to pay. In 1680, William Dockwra and Robert Murray started the London Penny Post. They used hand stamps to mark mail that was paid for. Later, in 1835, Lovrenc Košir suggested using thin paper decals. He thought these could be very thin to stop reuse. However, these ideas were not used right away.

Sir Rowland Hill is famous for creating the modern stamp. He studied the postal system and wrote a big report in 1837. He suggested using a small bit of paper with a sticky wash on the back.

On 1 May 1840, the United Kingdom issued the Penny Black. This was the first adhesive postage stamp. An artist named Henry Corbould drew the image of Queen Victoria. A firm called Perkins, Bacon & Petch printed them. Within three years, Switzerland and Brazil also used stamps. By 1860, ninety different countries used them.

Collectors like stamps because they are beautiful and show history. They can show how a country has changed over time. Some collectors buy stamps from the government even if they do not mail anything. This can actually help the government make a profit. Stamps connect us to the past through the art and stories they tell.
