You can go there to send letters or small parcels. People also buy postage stamps, packaging, and stationery at these locations. Some offices do more than just mail. They can help with government forms, like passport applications. They may also collect fees for things like road tax. The person who is in charge of a post office is called a postmaster.

Mail services work in many different ways depending on the building. A General Post Office is often the main headquarters for a whole country. Some buildings are just for sorting mail and are called sorting offices. Other places are mail exchanges that sit inside airports or train stations. You might also see mailboxes or post office boxes used for picking up items. In Germany, there are even special stations called Pack-Stations for packages. In the United States, some offices have Automated Postal Centers that work even when the building is closed.

People have been moving messages for a very long time. As early as 2400 BCE, Egyptian pharaohs used couriers to spread their decrees. In the Persian Empire, a system called Chapar Khaneh existed along the Royal Road. The Roman Empire also had a network called the Cursus Publicus. The Roman emperor Diocletian even made two separate systems. One system used horses or mules for fast, urgent news. The other system used sturdy oxen to move heavy, bulk shipments.

History shows many interesting changes in how we use mail. In the 1600s, the term "post office" began to be used in England. During the 19th century in the United States, mail was often delivered to general stores. People would go to town to pick up their mail and newspapers at once. In some parts of Canada, people used a "way office" system to help small villages. The oldest functioning post office in the world is in Sanquhar, Scotland. It has been working since 1712, back when horses and stagecoaches carried the mail.

Today, post offices connect us to the rest of the world. They help us stay in touch with friends and family through letters. Large buildings, like the James Farley Post Office in New York, show how important mail can be. This building is the largest operating post office in America. It even has a famous quote on its front about how couriers work through rain and night. Whether using a small local office or a big machine, postal systems help our world stay connected.
